Annie Paradis
Should I be Doing Something More with my Life

In Iowa, when the sun sets,
the world looks like
it is ending. At these points in the day,
in late summer, I would awe myself.
Like my own Icelandic pool:
wanting to stare at the sun
so instead staring at myself
wanting to touch the sun
so instead touching myself.

In Atlanta, months later,
I would live in a church at the top of a hill
and upon a path everyday find new
and empty condom wrappers
colorful and still pulsing with deadlife.
Alive like the way skin smells
after you lick it.

In the night now –
when I get to his camp
I don’t see him until our faces touch.
Like any animal
I am enough to consume him.
And like any God
I’m only thinking of myself.
